Lithuania left eyes vote win after years of austerity

VILNIUS (Reuters) – Centre-left parties look set to be propelled to power in Lithuania’s election on Sunday by voters angry at years of austerity, but an incoming government may have little choice but to stick to tough budget policies. Economists said the Baltic nation’s high borrowing needs mean a coalition likely to be formed by the Labour Party and the Social Democratic Party will have little room for maneuver as it strives for euro membership in the next few years. Baltic Dry Index Swamped by Excess Capacity

NEW YORK (TheStreet) — Commodity shipping has been unable to hold on to late 2011 gains so far this year as the industry’s continuing struggle with a glut of container ships sent the Baltic Dry Index to its second-worst month on record in January. The Baltic Dry Index (BDI), a measure of shipping costs for commodities, sank 61% in January, marking the second-biggest monthly decline since the Baltic Exchange started keeping records in 1985.
